Remarks on some open problems in phase-field modelling of solidification

چکیده

Three different topics in phase-field modelling of solidification are discussed, with particular emphasis on the limitations of the currently available modelling approaches. First, thin-interface limits of two-sided phasefield models are examined, and it is shown that the antitrapping current is in general not sufficient to remove all thin-interface effects. Second, orientation-field models for polycrystalline solidification are analysed, and it is shown that the standard relaxational equation of motion for the orientation field is incorrect in coherent polycrystalline matter. Third, it is pointed out that the standard procedure to incorporate fluctuations into the phase-field approach cannot be used in a straightforward way for a quantitative description of nucleation.

A generalized algorithm for modelling phase change problems in materials processing

Phase change problems form an integral part of several manufacturing and materials processing applications. Such problems are computationally challenging because of the presence of multiple length scales and morphologically complex interfaces. In this work, we address some of those challenges through a generalized algorithm for computational modelling of solidification processes of binary alloy...

Meshless analysis of casting process considering non-Fourier heat transfer

Casting is considered as a major manufacturing process. Thermal analysis of a solidifying medium is of great importance for appropriate design of casting processes. The conventional governing equation of a solidifying medium is based on the Fourier heat conduction law, which does not account for the phase-lag between the heat flux and the temperature gradient. In this paper, the concept of phas...

Modelling and application: A research domain in mathematics education

Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is introducing modelling and application as a research domain in mathematics education through reviewing related literature. The first purpose of this review is to give a more clear meaning of modelling and application, and base on that, makes the distinction between modelling in mathematics education & modelling in other scientific domains. There are so...

Phase-field modelling of dendritic growth behaviour towards

We are interested in modelling the dendritic growth occurring during the solidification process of a pure material and especially to see the effect of the cooling / heating on the growth behaviour of this dendrite. For this purpose we use a phase-field model. The obtained partial differential equations are solved numerically by a finite difference method. In order to appreciate the shape of the...

Thermal Simulation of Solidification Process in Continuous Casting

In this study, a mathematical model is introduced to simulate the coupled heat transfer equation and Stefan condition occurring in moving boundary problems such as the solidification process in the continuous casting machines. In the continuous casting process, there exists a two-phase Stefan problem with moving boundary. The control-volume finite difference approach together with the boundary ...
